Alabama Attorney General Troy King took an extreme measure when responding to allegations that city officials enabled an illicit bingo parlor within their jurisdiction. To take such measures would violate Alabama laws prohibiting electronic bingo. As part of his response against such gambling operations in Alabama, all financial assets of an entire city have been frozen as soon as any evidence emerged supporting these allegations.
Steve Marshall, Alabama Attorney General has issued an order freezing Lipscomb City’s financial assets due to suspicion that city officials may have gained financially through Jay’s Charity Bingo operations in Birmingham metro area. This decision follows allegations against Lipscomb officials.
Asset freeze has brought to a standstill all financial transactions for the city, leaving employees unpaid and services unavailable for residents.
Tonja Baldwin, Mayor of Lipscomb, expressed her displeasure with this situation and highlighted its impracticality, emphasizing how it creates difficulties with daily operational duties.
Disappearing Bingo Machines
Marshall’s Office took action after stolen bingo terminals previously seized as evidence by Alabama Attorney General’s Office were discovered at Jay’s Charity Bingo and used as evidence against five individuals associated with it. These arrests took place following their discovery at Jay’s Charity Bingo hall.
These stolen machines had been taken during an earlier raid at another illegal bingo establishment located 80 miles from Lipscomb – however they mysteriously vanished before authorities could seize them as planned.
“To steal items clearly marked as evidence shows just how far individuals will go to avoid accountability,” Marshall admitted openly.
Jay’s Charity Bingo temporarily suspended operations as a result of raids conducted in August; however, court documents indicate it recommenced operations upon recovering stolen machines, according to court documents. Furthermore, Jay’s is also included within an asset freeze.
Moral Menace
Electronic bingo machines in Alabama have long been an issue that sparks heated discussions on their legality and public welfare implications. While operators claim their machines comply with state bingo regulations, Marshall sees them as potential dangers to public wellbeing.
Marshall brought swift legal action following Alabama Supreme Court’s October 2022 ruling stating only traditional bingo could legally operate within Alabama’s boundaries, prompting Marshall’s enforcement actions shortly afterwards.
On December 2, a court hearing has been set up to decide the fate of Lipscomb city’s assets that have been frozen since August 1.
