On November 16th, Sahara Las Vegas will close down their poker room, in favor of expanding their selection of slot machines. Paul Hobson announced this change mid-December; players can experience exclusive slot banks here as well as test out games from leading gaming content developers.
The Sahara has seen its poker room change hands throughout its existence. After initially closing its doors in April 2011 for renovation work, when acquired and rebranded as SLS in 2014 it didn’t reopen; not until it rebranded back as Sahara that one was introduced again anew in February 2020.
With this decision, the Sahara becomes the fifth major casino on the Las Vegas Strip to shutter their poker facilities within five years.

The Logic Behind the Change
Even as popularity for poker has diminished compared to its peak two decades ago, it still draws large crowds; many Strip poker rooms operate at least half capacity nightly. Part of its appeal may lie in its economics – unlike table or slot machine games which provide house edges, poker doesn’t generate as much casino income because the only profit it brings casinos comes through rake and tournament fees collected per pot or instalments of each pot won.
Wider Trends in Casino Offerings
Food halls and expanded gaming options have quickly become the centerpiece of Vegas casinos’ operations in response to financial imperatives; more profitable ventures like poker rooms have made way for food halls or slot machines taking up what used to be dedicated solely for them. Thus, poker rooms are giving way to food halls that generate higher returns per square foot as space for these new endeavors are reallocated across Vegas casinos in an effort to maximize returns per square foot; food halls replace buffets while slot machines occupy spaces once used exclusively by poker.
Poker rooms have long been targeted as being among the more time-consuming casino activities; taking up long stretches of players’ attention. This summer’s relocation of The Venetian’s poker room away from its central location only strengthens this trend.
Caesars Palace may follow in the footsteps of other Caesars Entertainment properties by closing its poker room for good after temporarily shutting it down to accommodate slot machine expansion. Though no date for its reopening has been provided by officials at Caesars, industry insiders believe its permanent closure may soon follow suit.
