Virgin Hotels Faces Worker Replacement Controversy Amid Strike

news

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas reportedly saw an upsurge of temporary job applications following an estimated 700 hospitality employee strike initiated at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas; this led the union to label these newly hired as’scabs.’

Temporary Hires Called Into Question

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas expressed its sincerest thanks for the hundreds of applicants that applied for jobs after some members of its workforce went on strike. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas actively vetted and processed these applications before hiring several skilled temporary employees – some who previously belonged to Culinary Union from other Las Vegas properties!

The hotel strongly denied claims made by Culinary Union that temporary hires at its establishment were unqualified or dishonest; such allegations have been described by management as groundless.

Striking Culinary Union members at this hotel have been placed on strike leave with assurances from management that their positions won’t be terminated as part of an agreed solution.

Hotel representatives pledged their commitment to all team members’ health and welfare and encouraged Culinary Union leaders to focus on meaningful negotiations for the benefit of members rather than on bargaining positions.

Management has made efforts to encourage rank and file workers at a hotel to vote on its most recent offer as part of a tentative agreement reached between its front desk, bell/valet and call center employees represented by Teamsters union and these workers’ respective collective bargaining units.

Dispute Over Contract Terms

Culinary Union Secretary-Treasurer Ted Pappageorge recently lashed out at a hotel for only slightly improving their offer during last Thursday’s bargaining session. The union is seeking a five-year contract featuring satisfactory salary increases and enhanced benefits; hospitality workers have been without such contracts since June 1, 2023.

Although Virgin Hotels Las Vegas remains on strike, Culinary Union members have successfully reached agreements with several other Las Vegas establishments often on the verge of striking, often as part of an amicable solution. They continue to warn the public against crossing picket lines or employing temporary labor referred to as ‘scab’ workers.

As negotiations remain non-productive, this strike coincides with an event like the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix that could draw millions to Vegas.
